A new engine noise is worth investigating. The sound can help guide an inspection, but a noise alone does not establish which part needs repair.
Describe the sound and when it happens
Rattling: Note whether it happens at start-up, idle or while accelerating.
Knocking: Tell the shop whether it changes with engine speed or load, and report any accompanying warning light.
Hissing: Note where the sound seems to come from and whether it continues after the engine is switched off.
Clicking or ticking: Say whether it is new, louder than usual or accompanied by rough running.
Avoid guessing at the repair
Record the sound if you can do so safely. Bring relevant maintenance records and explain when the problem began.
If the noise comes with an oil-pressure or temperature warning, stop safely and follow your owner’s manual rather than continuing to drive.
