Vehicle maintenance checklist
Use this checklist to review maintenance with your mechanic. Requirements vary by vehicle, age, kilometres and use, so start with the manufacturer’s schedule and your service records.
Engine oil
Follow the oil specification and service interval for your vehicle. Check the level as directed in the owner’s manual. An unexplained drop or a leak needs assessment; oil colour alone does not establish whether a service is due.
Spark plugs
For engines that use spark plugs, replacement timing depends on the engine and plug type. Follow the vehicle’s schedule. Rough running or difficult starting can have several causes, so describe the symptoms rather than assuming the plugs need replacing.
Timing belt
Find out whether your engine uses a timing belt or a chain. If it has a belt, use the replacement requirements for the exact model and year. If previous service records are missing, ask the shop to help review what is known.
Battery
Report slow starting, repeated boosts or concerns with the battery connections. Battery age is useful information, but testing helps determine its condition rather than relying on a fixed replacement age.
Engine and cabin filters
Engine and cabin filters serve different purposes. Review their condition and the vehicle’s service requirements. Ask which filters are due rather than replacing every filter because the season has changed.
Tires
Review tire condition, tread wear and the pressures specified for the vehicle. Mention vibration or uneven wear. Seasonal changes, rotation and any alignment work should suit the tire set and vehicle.
Lights
Check that headlights, brake lights, turn signals and other exterior lights work. Report failed or intermittent lights so the concern can be assessed.
Fluids
Different fluids have different specifications and maintenance requirements. Follow the owner’s manual, and have repeated losses or leaks assessed instead of treating every low level as a routine top-up.
Plan your maintenance visit
Bring the vehicle’s year, make, model, kilometres and any service records. Mention warning lights, new noises or changes in starting, braking or handling.
