A 2019 Ford F-150 came to AMR Automotive with a loud whining noise from the rear, especially at highway speeds. Inspection identified a failing pinion bearing in the rear differential.
Pinion bearings help keep the differential’s ring and pinion gears positioned correctly. Wear can cause noise and vibration and may lead to additional driveline damage.
The differential repair
The repair involved a full rear differential rebuild. The damaged parts were removed and replaced with a new ring and pinion, along with new bearings and seals. Once the assembly was rebuilt and set up, the rear end was quiet and smooth again.
