Summer Car Maintenance Tips

Before a summer road trip, check the maintenance your vehicle is due for and deal with symptoms you’ve been putting off. Here are five practical places to start.

Five checks before you leave

Air conditioning: Make sure it cools the cabin and the vents have good airflow. Warm air or weak airflow calls for an inspection. Cabin AC is separate from the engine’s cooling system.

Tires: Check cold tire pressures against the vehicle label and look for damage or uneven wear.

Fluids: Check oil and coolant using the owner’s manual. A low level may point to a leak or another concern; use the specified fluid and have unexplained losses investigated.

Oil and filters: Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. A summer trip is a good time to check what is due, rather than replacing parts simply because the season changed.

Brakes: Report squealing, grinding, vibration or a change in pedal feel. Have a concern assessed before heading out.
