Winter Car Care: Fluids, Filters and Starting

Before Calgary’s colder weather arrives, review the service your vehicle is due for and pay attention to changes in starting or running.

Use the specified fluids

Check engine oil and coolant as directed in the owner’s manual. Use the specified oil and coolant; winter is not a reason to choose a different oil viscosity without manufacturer guidance.

Ask for coolant protection and condition to be checked if the service history is unclear. A low level or repeated fluid loss needs investigation.

Service parts when they are due

Worn spark plugs can contribute to starting or running problems in a gasoline engine, but they are not the only possible cause. Follow the vehicle’s replacement schedule and have symptoms diagnosed.

Filter requirements also vary by vehicle. Check the maintenance record before assuming every air or fuel filter needs replacement for winter.
