Hot weather can expose problems with your vehicle’s cooling system, battery and air conditioning. A few checks before a summer trip can help you spot a concern while you still have time to arrange service.
Check cooling and comfort systems
Check the coolant level only when the engine is cool and follow your owner’s manual. A falling level, leak or temperature warning needs attention. Use the coolant type and service interval specified for your vehicle; a coolant change is not automatically due every two years.
Cabin air conditioning keeps you comfortable. If the air is warm or airflow is weak, arrange an inspection rather than adding refrigerant without finding the cause.
Look after tires, oil and brakes
Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, using the vehicle’s tire-information label. Check engine oil as directed in the owner’s manual and use the specified oil.
Slow starting, unusual brake noises or a change in pedal feel are reasons to have the vehicle checked. If braking is compromised, stop driving and arrange assistance.
