This Ford 3.5 engine came to AMR Automotive for timing-system work associated with a cam-phaser rattle. The job included a timing-chain replacement and replacement of the associated components and gaskets behind the timing cover.
Why the repair involved more than one part
Accessing the timing system involves substantial labour. On this job, the work included the related components behind the cover rather than replacing the chain alone.
That does not mean every engine with a rattle needs the same repair. The source of a noise and the appropriate parts need to be established for the individual vehicle.
What to tell the shop
Describe whether the noise happens on a cold start, once the engine is warm or while driving. Bring the vehicle’s oil-service history if you have it, and report any warning lights or rough running.
