A new exhaust noise, loose component or exhaust smell deserves attention. An inspection can help establish whether the issue involves a leak, a mounting or another part of the system.
Listen for a change
A louder rumble, rattle or hiss can come from different exhaust components. Tell the shop when it happens, whether it changes with engine speed and whether it began after an impact.
Visible damage or corrosion may also be a reason to inspect the system. Do not crawl under a vehicle that is not safely supported or touch hot exhaust parts.
Take cabin fumes seriously
If exhaust fumes enter the cabin, stop driving and arrange assistance. Carbon monoxide is dangerous and cannot be reliably detected by smell.
A fuel-economy change or warning light can have several causes and needs a diagnosis rather than an automatic exhaust replacement.
