Battling Cold Weather Car Issues

Battling cold winter in Calgary can bring some challenges for your vehicle. As the temperature drops, your car may experience a range of issues that can affect its performance. At AMR Automotive Services, we understand the importance of keeping your vehicle in top condition during the winter months.

One of the most common issues during winter is extra battery drain. Cold temperatures can significantly reduce your battery’s efficiency, making it harder for your car to start. To combat this problem, make sure your battery is in good condition. If your battery is more than three years old, it might be a good idea to have it tested and, if necessary, replaced.

Maintaining clear visibility is crucial for safe winter driving. However, icy conditions can be tough on your windshield wipers, leading to breakage or reduced effectiveness. Replace them if they appear brittle or damaged.

Cold temperatures can also impact your vehicle’s fluids, including fuel. To prevent a frozen fuel tank, try to keep your gas tank at least half full during the winter. Check and top up other essential fluids like oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze regularly to ensure they remain effective in colder conditions.

AMR Automotive in Calgary are here to help ensure your vehicle stays in optimal condition. Stay safe on the roads and embrace the beauty of winter with a well-maintained and reliable car.

Keeping your vehicle maintained in winter will give you peace of mind just knowing you’ve prepared for the conditions ahead. Call AMR Automotive 403-243-2483 to arrange your appointment today.

The Perfect Time For a Maintenance Check-up

Maintenance check-up

This will not be the last of winter in Calgary and as Canadians we all know that cold weather is hard on your vehicle and its engine. Vehicle failure is far more likely to happen in cold weather and the consequences more dangerous. Be pro-active!

Make sure your battery, brakes, cooling and heating systems, belts and hoses, lights and fuses, exhaust systems, windshield wipers and tires are in tip-top shape.

  1. Battery – your motor needs a fully charged battery to start in cold weather. Have your battery tested in the fall and install a new one if necessary BEFORE it fails.
  2. Brakes – check your brakes and have them adjusted if necessary. Pulling, change in pedal feel, or unusual squealing or grinding may mean they need repair.
  3. Cooling and Heating System – check your radiator hoses and drive belts for cracks and leaks. All belts and hoses must be in good condition. Make sure the radiator cap, water pump and thermostat work properly. Test the strength and level of the coolant/anti-freeze, and make sure the heater and defroster work well. Anti-freeze safe to at least -40°C is recommended.
  4. Lights – make sure the front and rear lights are working properly to ensure good visibility. And especially ensure the car’s flashing hazard lights are operational.
  5. Exhaust System – be sure to check the whole system for leaks. Any exhaust system leak can allow carbon monoxide to seep into the passenger compartment. Carbon monoxide is an insidious killer because it is colourless and odourless. This problem is most dangerous in winter when windows are kept closed.
  6. Windshield Wipers – make sure that your wipers are in good condition. Replace blades that streak. Change your wiper blades to winter blades. They are heavier and push snow and ice more easily. Fill up on winter washer fluid in the -40°C temperature range and carry an extra jug in your vehicle.
  7. Tires – properly inflated, high quality winter tires will give you the best traction on winter roads and increase fuel efficiency. Winter tires are designed with a soft rubber formula to remain flexible in sub-zero temperatures and provide superior traction in icy conditions.

Preventative maintenance is key. Getting your vehicle ready for winter will give you peace of mind just knowing you’ve prepared for the conditions ahead. Call AMR Automotive 403-243-2483 to arrange your appointment today.

Why Spark Plugs Matter

AMR Automotive Spark Plug ServicingAt the heart of your car’s engine lies the combustion process and spark plugs are instrumental in initiating this sequence. As the piston compresses the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber, the spark plug generates a spark that ignites the mixture, resulting in controlled explosions that drive the engine’s pistons. This continuous cycle is what ultimately powers your car.

Worn-Out Spark Plugs and Consequences:

Over time, spark plugs can wear out due to intense heat and pressure. When spark plugs become worn or damaged, several issues can arise, affecting both performance and fuel efficiency. One of the primary consequences of worn-out spark plugs is poor fuel efficiency.

Engine misfires are another common problem associated with worn-out spark plugs. Misfires occur when the spark plug fails to ignite the air-fuel mixture at the right time. Not only does this compromise performance, but it can also result in increased emissions and potential damage to other engine components.

Inspection Interval:

To ensure that your spark plugs are in optimal condition, it is crucial to adhere to the inspection and replacement intervals recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.
