The Perfect Time For a Maintenance Check-up

Maintenance check-up

This will not be the last of winter in Calgary and as Canadians we all know that cold weather is hard on your vehicle and its engine. Vehicle failure is far more likely to happen in cold weather and the consequences more dangerous. Be pro-active!

Make sure your battery, brakes, cooling and heating systems, belts and hoses, lights and fuses, exhaust systems, windshield wipers and tires are in tip-top shape.

  1. Battery – your motor needs a fully charged battery to start in cold weather. Have your battery tested in the fall and install a new one if necessary BEFORE it fails.
  2. Brakes – check your brakes and have them adjusted if necessary. Pulling, change in pedal feel, or unusual squealing or grinding may mean they need repair.
  3. Cooling and Heating System – check your radiator hoses and drive belts for cracks and leaks. All belts and hoses must be in good condition. Make sure the radiator cap, water pump and thermostat work properly. Test the strength and level of the coolant/anti-freeze, and make sure the heater and defroster work well. Anti-freeze safe to at least -40°C is recommended.
  4. Lights – make sure the front and rear lights are working properly to ensure good visibility. And especially ensure the car’s flashing hazard lights are operational.
  5. Exhaust System – be sure to check the whole system for leaks. Any exhaust system leak can allow carbon monoxide to seep into the passenger compartment. Carbon monoxide is an insidious killer because it is colourless and odourless. This problem is most dangerous in winter when windows are kept closed.
  6. Windshield Wipers – make sure that your wipers are in good condition. Replace blades that streak. Change your wiper blades to winter blades. They are heavier and push snow and ice more easily. Fill up on winter washer fluid in the -40°C temperature range and carry an extra jug in your vehicle.
  7. Tires – properly inflated, high quality winter tires will give you the best traction on winter roads and increase fuel efficiency. Winter tires are designed with a soft rubber formula to remain flexible in sub-zero temperatures and provide superior traction in icy conditions.

Preventative maintenance is key. Getting your vehicle ready for winter will give you peace of mind just knowing you’ve prepared for the conditions ahead. Call AMR Automotive 403-243-2483 to arrange your appointment today.
