Classic1980 Camaro?

Driving a classic like a 1980 Camaro? Upgrading key components can make a big difference in how it feels on the road. Recently at AMR Automotive, we worked on a ’80 Camaro to improve its handling and driver feedback by upgrading the subframe bushings.

Older rubber bushings can wear out over time and allow excess movement in the suspension, which leads to sloppier handling and less precise road feel. To tighten everything up, we installed , a high-performance upgrade that reduces deflection and gives the driver more confidence through corners and uneven pavement.

The result? A Camaro that responds more crisply to steering inputs, tracks better through turns, and offers a more engaging driving experience overall. If you’re looking to enhance your classic’s performance and feel

A Smooth Start for a 2017 Ford Transit 350

The team at AMR Automotive recently serviced a 2017 Ford Transit 350 3.2 diesel that was experiencing hard starting along with white smoke during startup. After diagnosing the issue, we found that two glow plugs had failed, which was affecting the engine’s ability to ignite fuel efficiently, a common problem in diesel engines during colder conditions.

To restore reliable performance, all five glow plugs were replaced to help ensure smoother starting, reduce smoke on ignition, and improve overall drivability. This type of precise diesel repair reflects the commitment to quality service and technical expertise at AMR Automotive, helping keep vehicles running safely and dependably on Calgary roads.

Replacing a Bad Pinion Bearing

A loud whining noise coming from the rear of a vehicle, especially at highway speeds, is never something to ignore. Recently, a 2019 Ford F-150 came into the shop with exactly that concern. After a thorough inspection, the issue was traced back to a failing pinion bearing in the rear differential.

Pinion bearings play a critical role in keeping the ring and pinion gears properly aligned. When they wear out, they can cause noise, vibration, and eventually serious drive train damage if left unaddressed.

In this case, the repair involved a full rear differential rebuild. The damaged components were removed and replaced with a new ring and pinion, along with all new bearings and seals. Once reassembled and properly set up, the rear end was quiet, smooth, and back to factory-level performance.

If your truck is making unusual noises from the rear, especially under load or at speed, it’s best to have it checked sooner rather than later. Catching a bad pinion bearing early can save time, money, and prevent more extensive repairs down the road.

Common Mid-Winter Vehicle Issues

Calgary’s mid-winter temperatures can be tough on vehicles, often revealing problems that affect reliability and safety. At AMR Automotive in Calgary, technicians frequently see cold-weather issues that leave drivers stranded or struggling to stay road-ready.

One of the most common problems is hard starting caused by thickened engine oil. When temperatures drop, oil becomes more viscous, making it harder for the engine to turn over and placing added strain on the battery and starter. Battery performance itself also declines significantly in cold weather, which is why weak or dead batteries are a frequent winter complaint.

Frozen fuel lines are another mid-winter concern, often caused by condensation in the fuel system that turns to ice in extreme cold. Reduced tire pressure is also common, as cold air contracts and lowers PSI, affecting traction, braking, and overall handling on icy roads.

Routine winter inspections and preventative maintenance can help identify these issues before they become major problems. AMR Automotive provides trusted winter vehicle care to keep Calgary drivers safe, reliable, and confident throughout the coldest months of the year.

Why Winter Salt is a Serious Problem

Undercarriage & Brake Lines

Winter in Calgary means snow, slush, and unfortunately, road salt. While salt helps keep our roads safer, it also creates a brewing problem for your vehicle’s undercarriage and brake lines.

When salt and slush get kicked up onto the underside of your car, they cling to metal surfaces. Over time, this corrosive mixture accelerates rust and deterioration on critical components like the undercarriage, exhaust system, and especially brake lines. Brake lines are vital to safe stopping power, and corrosion can weaken them, leading to costly repairs or even safety hazards.

How Corrosion Happens

  • Salt buildup: As you drive, salt collects in nooks and crannies beneath your vehicle.

  • Moisture exposure: Snow and slush hold moisture against metal parts longer than dry conditions.

  • Rust formation: The combination of salt and water speeds up oxidation, what we know as rust, which eats away at metal.

Protect Your Vehicle
Regularly rinsing the undercarriage during the winter months can help wash away salt and reduce corrosion. Inspections are also key, especially before and after winter, to catch early signs of rust or damage.

How Sub-Zero Temperatures Can Turn Small Leaks into Big Problems

When temperatures drop well below zero, your vehicle works a lot harder than you might realize. Cold weather causes metal and rubber components to contract, which can expose small weaknesses in hoses, seals, gaskets, and fluid lines. What might be a barely noticeable seep in warmer weather can quickly turn into a leak when everything tightens up in extreme cold. Coolant, oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid are especially vulnerable during sub-zero conditions.

The real problem is that these small leaks often go unnoticed until they lead to bigger issues, overheating, steering problems, poor shifting, or even engine damage. A mid-winter vehicle checkup can catch these issues early, before a minor repair turns into a costly breakdown. At AMR Automotive, our experienced technicians know exactly what to look for during Alberta’s coldest months. If you want peace of mind and a vehicle that stays reliable all winter long, book a checkup with AMR Automotive today.

2019 Ford F-350 Serviced at AMR Automotive

This 2019 Ford F-350 came in for its 6-year service at 130,000 km.

We installed new Bilstein shocks to restore stability and ride comfort—right on time, since shock life typically tops out around the 100,000 km mark. The truck also received a Bright Source LED headlight conversion for sharper, safer nighttime visibility.

Up front, we fitted fully coated high-performance rotors paired with Akebono pads for improved braking power and long-term durability.

To round things out, we completed a full fluid service: differential, coolant, oil, and fuel filters—all fresh and ready for the next stretch of work. A precise 4-wheel alignment finished the job.
