Why Winter Salt is a Serious Problem

Undercarriage & Brake Lines

Winter in Calgary means snow, slush, and unfortunately, road salt. While salt helps keep our roads safer, it also creates a brewing problem for your vehicle’s undercarriage and brake lines.

When salt and slush get kicked up onto the underside of your car, they cling to metal surfaces. Over time, this corrosive mixture accelerates rust and deterioration on critical components like the undercarriage, exhaust system, and especially brake lines. Brake lines are vital to safe stopping power, and corrosion can weaken them, leading to costly repairs or even safety hazards.

How Corrosion Happens

  • Salt buildup: As you drive, salt collects in nooks and crannies beneath your vehicle.

  • Moisture exposure: Snow and slush hold moisture against metal parts longer than dry conditions.

  • Rust formation: The combination of salt and water speeds up oxidation, what we know as rust, which eats away at metal.

Protect Your Vehicle
Regularly rinsing the undercarriage during the winter months can help wash away salt and reduce corrosion. Inspections are also key, especially before and after winter, to catch early signs of rust or damage.

At AMR Automotive in Calgary, we specialize in thorough vehicle inspections and quality repairs to keep your car safe and road-worthy year-round. If you’re concerned about corrosion on your undercarriage or brake lines, our experienced technicians can assess and address any issues before they become bigger problems. How Sub-Zero Temperatures Can Turn Small Leaks into Big Problems

When temperatures drop well below zero, your vehicle works a lot harder than you might realize. Cold weather causes metal and rubber components to contract, which can expose small weaknesses in hoses, seals, gaskets, and fluid lines. What might be a barely noticeable seep in warmer weather can quickly turn into a leak when everything tightens up in extreme cold. Coolant, oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid are especially vulnerable during sub-zero conditions.

The real problem is that these small leaks often go unnoticed until they lead to bigger issues, overheating, steering problems, poor shifting, or even engine damage. A mid-winter vehicle checkup can catch these issues early, before a minor repair turns into a costly breakdown. At AMR Automotive, our experienced technicians know exactly what to look for during Alberta’s coldest months. If you want peace of mind and a vehicle that stays reliable all winter long, book a checkup with AMR Automotive today.

Why a Local Mechanic Matters

Local Mechanic AMR AutomotiveThere’s something quietly reassuring about handing your keys to someone who knows your name and maybe even your truck. In an age of chain shops and faceless service bays, the local mechanic stands as a kind of last honest tradesman, the kind who still shakes your hand and means it.

A local mechanic doesn’t just fix cars, they build trust. They know the roads you drive, the winters your vehicle survives, the quirks of your make and model. They’ve likely worked on your neighbour’s SUV or your kid’s first car. That familiarity matters. It’s personal.

And when something sounds “off,” they don’t reach for a script—they listen. To you. To your car. To experience.

Spring Tune-Up Checklist

With winter behind us, it’s time to get everything back in top shape for the warmer months. A thorough spring tune-up can help prevent issues and keep your car, home, and outdoor equipment running efficiently.

Start by checking all fluids and filters, including oil, coolant, and transmission fluid in your car. Replacing air filters improves efficiency and overall performance. Inspect the battery and electrical systems, as cold weather can drain power. Testing and cleaning battery terminals can help prevent unexpected failures. Examine the tires and brakes by checking tread depth, tire pressure, and brake pad condition to ensure a safe and smooth ride. For your home and vehicle, clean or replace HVAC and air conditioning filters to maintain good air quality and system efficiency. Finally, service outdoor equipment such as lawnmowers, power tools, and irrigation systems to ensure they are ready for spring projects.

A little maintenance now can help prevent costly repairs later and keep everything running smoothly throughout the season.

Support a trusted local business that cares about your vehicle as much as you do. For more information or to book an appointment, give us a call today!

Full Rebuild for Classic 1977 Chevy C20 Pickup Truck

AMR Automotive recently completed a full engine rebuild for a classic 1977 Chevy pickup truck, taking performance and reliability to a whole new level. The project featured the installation of an LY6 Iron Block, a powerful foundation known for its durability. To enhance the performance, a VVT delete was done, which removes the variable valve timing for a more predictable and controlled power delivery.

Key upgrades include the roller rocker trunion upgrade with hardened pushrods, ensuring the engine can handle higher stress loads while improving longevity. The engine was honed with new rings and bearings, bringing it back to peak condition. A Trick Flow camshaft (30602003) was installed, adding a significant boost in horsepower and torque without compromising low-end performance. This camshaft is a great choice for anyone looking to maximize power in their LS engine builds.

To optimize performance, the engine was custom-tuned in-shop using HP Tuners, refining fuel and timing adjustments for maximum output. A set of Spin Tech 6000 mufflers with side exits were added, giving the truck an aggressive, deep rumble. AMR Automotive’s expertise in engine rebuilds shines through in this complete overhaul, bringing new life to this classic Chevy pickup.

At AMR Automotive, we’re dedicated to preserving the legacy of classic vehicles with expert care and craftsmanship. If your classic car or truck needs attention, bring it to AMR Automotive – where passion meets precision.
